Is Your HVAC System A2L Ready?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you’re in design or pre-con on any project right now, pay attention.

New code requirements for A2L refrigerants are here—and they’re already impacting the HVAC systems you can specify and install.

→ I have a project I want to discuss!

Why This Matters

A2L refrigerants are replacing the older ones being phased out due to environmental regulations. But there’s a catch: A2Ls are mildly flammable, which triggers new mechanical, electrical, and fire safety code requirements—especially for hotels, apartments, and buildings with corridors or shafts.

These changes mean:

  • Many popular HVAC systems are now non-compliant
  • Room layouts may need adjustment due to refrigerant piping limitations
  • Ventilation systems might require upgrades
  • Permitting and inspection delays if you don’t plan now

Effective January 1, 2025, refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) >700 will be prohibited for new equipment. This transition introduces new layout, ventilation, and code requirements for buildings using A2L refrigerants.1

🚨 Some A2L-compliant equipment is still limited in availability.

Don’t Wait Until You’re Red-Lined

Code changes like this aren’t just about compliance—they’re about risk. Failing to address these refrigerant updates now could mean:

  • Redesigning HVAC layouts mid-permitting

  • Material or equipment shortages

  • Failed inspections due to flammability code issues
