Indoor vs. Outdoor Hotel Pools: Understand the Tradeoffs

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Choosing between indoor and outdoor hotel pools comes down to more than guest appeal. Both take up valuable space and add ongoing costs. An outdoor pool that sits unused for months and an indoor pool that sees little traffic raise the same question: Will guests use it enough to justify the investment?

Talk Through Your Pool Options

What Does Your Brand Allow?

Before investing in either layout, confirm the current pool requirements for your hotel brand and location. Those requirements may determine the direction. If both options are allowed, climate and expected guest use become central to the decision.

How Much Use Will the Climate Support?

A shorter climate window may strengthen the case for an indoor pool. A longer window may make an outdoor pool more viable. Confirm brand requirements, market demand, and project economics before deciding.

Indoor Hotel Pools: Plan for Year-Round Costs

An indoor pool can provide guests with year-round access. It requires conditioned interior space, dehumidification, ventilation, vapor control, and moisture-resistant materials and finishes. Your budget needs to account for these systems and their year-round operating expense, even when guest use is low.

Outdoor Hotel Pools: Plan for Site Requirements

An outdoor pool requires space for the pool itself, deck, guest access, drainage, equipment, and weather protection. That space may compete with parking, landscaping, or other amenities. The usable season and expected guest demand need to justify dedicating that much of your site to the pool.

Compare Hotel Pool Construction and Operating Costs

The lower-cost option is not always the better investment. Weigh construction and operating costs against expected guest use, and consider what other uses could generate value from that space.

Does the expected use justify the space and ongoing expense?
