Understanding the New A2L Refrigerant EPA Regulations

Reading Time: 3 minutes

IMPORTANT: Did you know some current HVAC refrigerants will be phased out by January 1, 2025? This could significantly impact your project’s HVAC design. Read on to find out more about the new regulations and how they can affect your upcoming development.

I have a project I want to discuss!

What Changes Are Coming with A2L Refrigerants

The EPA’s new regulations require replacing current refrigerants like R410a with alternatives such as R454B and R32. This regulatory shift impacts the design, installation, and maintenance of all new HVAC systems.

The transition to A2L refrigerants is driven by the need to reduce global warming potential and meet the demand for sustainable building practices. This shift is essential for developers looking to avoid fines and capitalize on the growing green construction market.

Navigating Compliance and Implementation

Understanding who is affected and the timeline for implementation is essential. For any project currently in the design phase or where equipment needs to be purchased, all purchases must be made in 2024 and installed in 2025, as the current refrigerants will be phased out by January 1, 2025. This year, strategies for maintaining compliance and ensuring that new designs meet the updated standards will be critical topics for all developers.

EPA intends to consider VRF systems in a separate notice.

Impact Factors To Consider When Transitioning To New Refrigerants In HVAC Systems:

  • Higher Upfront Costs: New low-GWP refrigerants and compatible HVAC systems can be more expensive initially. Developers should budget for increased equipment and installation costs.
  • Retrofitting Expenses: Upgrading existing HVAC systems to use new refrigerants may involve significant retrofitting expenses, including potential modifications to system components and infrastructure.
  • Project Timelines: The transition to new refrigerants may extend project timelines. The need for retrofitting and adjustments can cause delays, affecting overall project schedules.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with new environmental regulations can increase costs and time, as developers may need to invest in specific certifications and meet updated standards.
