Construction Update | A Robot that can hang drywall!

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Using robots on the jobsite is technologically savvy, but more importantly, speaks to a commitment to safety and productivity. Robots can perform those repetitive and dangerous tasks increasingly unappealing to skilled laborers. Indeed, automation via robotic technology might be a solution to the labor crisis and a draw for young people to rejoin the construction job sector. Read on!

With a growing interest in robotics and streamlined workflows, contractors are looking for ways to use their time and resources best. According to a survey commissioned by ABB Robotics, an arm of global tech company ABB, only 55% of construction companies across the U.S., Europe, and China say they use robotics, compared to 84% of automotive companies and 79% of manufacturing companies.

Robots can offer increased safety to workers!

Most robots working on jobsites today include task-checking aids like drones, autonomous excavators, or exoskeletons that remove strain on humans lifting heavy objects or materials.

Technological Advances in Construction

Robotic automation offers enormous potential to enhance productivity, efficiency, and manufacturing flexibility throughout the construction industry, including automating the fabrication of modular homes. Increasingly, robots are used for manufacturing building components off-site, robotic welding and material handling on site, and robotic 3D printing of houses and customized structures. Here are some recent examples:

  • The San Francisco-based robotics firm Canvas has developed a robot to do a difficult task: the mudding and sanding processes of drywall finishing. Canvas’ robot eliminates the need for a human to finish this part of the construction process.

  • Boston Dynamics created “Spot,” a customizable four-footed robot that specializes in capturing data by walking around a jobsite.
  • Salt Lake City-based Sarcos Robotics has developed its Guardian XT unit, a robotic arm that an operator can control remotely to do dangerous tasks.

How can you keep up with these trends? With the industry’s innovations and technologies, now is the time to engage in construction education and become a construction leader.
